The Lone Star College System CyFair is presenting a series of programs aptly named L.I.F.E. The series Learning, Inspiration, Fellowship, and Enrichment explores art and literature to astronomy. On September 26th the community is invited to join Professor Ronnie Nespeca for a lesson in amateur astronomy and virtual stargazing.
Professor Nespeca will instruct the class on how the legendary heroes from Greek mythology earned their place in the starry heavens in honor of their achievements. Greek and Roman texts, according to information from Princeton University course CLA 212, mentioned the stars frequently. Roman Ptolemy of Alexandria cataloged and grouped 1022 stars into 48 constellations during the second century A.D. His work was the basis for the modern 88 constellations designated by the International Astronomical Union (Pasachoff, 134-135).
The L.I.F.E. programs are free charge and held Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the library Room 131 at 9191 Barker Cypress. Call the library at 281.290.3214 more information.
